“You’re mad. Bonkers. Off your head. But I’ll tell you a secret…all of the best people are.”

That’s from Alice in Wonderland, which is a story about one girl’s adventures. This is a story about some of mine.

Dirtbag Darling is an online adventure journal, one half dispatches from the wild and one half interviews with outdoor advocates working toward a great good, pursuing the unprofitable, conquering the useless, and defending the fun, because I think when more people get outdoors, there will be more people invested in the care and conservation of wild places. Adventure can be epic. And noble. And serious. But mostly, we pursue it because it’s a good time.

And if that’s the reason you get out there, then I salute you. I’ll be out there, too. And if we can accomplish something good for the world while we’re at it, then yeehaw.

About Johnie Gall

Johnie grew up on the East Coast and has spent the last decade in various writing roles across multiple industries. She’s a full-time professional writer, editor, and photographer who was named as one of the outdoor industry’s inaugural 30 Under 30. You can find out more about all that at BadCactusCreative.com (coming soon!).

Six years ago, she bought a Sprinter van with her husband, converted it into a part-time home, and has been exploring the country (and beyond) ever since on the pursuit of inspiration. She’s always on the hunt for stories that explore the relationship between humans and nature, from the wild peaks of New Zealand backcountry to the silty canyons of Big Bend, notebook in hand and camera in her bag.

When she’s not in front of a laptop with an iced coffee (black), she’s probably outdoors: kayaking in the Florida Keys, ice climbing in the Adirondacks, scaling rock walls in Utah or attempting to surf in California. She’s also a big fan of beer, Star Wars, bookstores, and her dog, Rowdy.
